Fancy Frugal Easter Mantel & Decor 2013

Fancy Frugal Life Easter 2013

Easter has shown up so fast this year! Last week I finally put up some bunnies and Easter decorations.

But first some images from our start of spring!

This tree in our backyard has bloomed and it was so pretty and fragrant.

This beautiful magnolia tree at my son’s school.

The day I put out Easter things my daughter discovered some furry friends and took them to school pick up.

Here’s a cute sign that I made with a blank unfinished wood piece from Hobby Lobby. It is painted first with craft paint and then Clear Chalkboard Coating by DecoArt. The cute little wood chick is from Michael’s and glued on with E6000.

It was painted and has pretty paper applied with Mod Podge.

Broiled Sesame Ginger Salmon with Roasted Veggies Recipe

best broiled sesame ginger broiled salmon

I’m in love with sesame seeds. I think they are delicious toasted. Also, I think fresh ginger makes the kitchen smell so gooood like P.F.Changs. I’m always trying new salmon recipes because its my favorite fish and always usually turns out for me. This one is a keeper 🙂

This recipe is adapted from one found on** I added a tiny bit of sesame oil.

 1 scallion, minced

2 tablespoons

reduced-sodium soy sauce

1  tablespoon rice vinegar

1  tablespoon honey

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1  teaspoon minced fresh ginger

1 pound center-cut salmon fillet, skinned (see Tip) and cut into 4 portions

1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds, (see Tip)

Chopped green onion to garnish (optional)

1.Whisk scallion, soy sauce, vinegar, honey and ginger in a medium bowl until the honey is dissolved. Place salmon in a sealable plastic bag, add 3 tablespoons of the sauce and refrigerate; let marinate for 15 minutes. Reserve the remaining sauce.
2.Preheat broiler. Line a small baking pan with foil and coat with cooking spray.
3.Transfer the salmon to the pan, skinned-side down. (Discard the marinade.) Broil the salmon 4 to 6 inches from the heat source until cooked through, 6 to 10 minutes. Drizzle with the reserved sauce and garnish with sesame seeds.
To toast sesame seeds, heat a small dry skillet over low heat. Add seeds and stir constantly, until golden and fragrant, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl and let cool.

Roasted Squash and zucchini with sesame oil

 Sesame Roasted Vegetables

1 yellow squash

1 zucchini

1 red bell pepper

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1 Tablespoon Sesame Seeds

salt & pepper to taste

I cut vegetables and placed them on a baking sheet then drizzled on oil and seasoned them with just salt & pepper. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top and bake at 375 degrees for around 30-35 min until you feel they are done.

I put in the veggies first then made the fish marinade. The fish only takes 6-10 minutes so I cooked it last.

My husband and I loved it! Such a good fresh tasting meal. How often do you make fish at home?

St. Patrick’s Day Plaid Nails

Shamrock Nail Art

Hi! This is just a quick post to show you the fun manicure I just did to get festive for St. Patty’s day tomorrow.

I did a light blue background color and then made plaid stripes with white, dark green and light green nail stripers. Those are the polishes with the long thin brushes. With a nail dotting tool I made a shamrock on one nail.

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Coffee Table Makeover

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Makeover in Provence

Once upon a sunny Spring like day, a DIY decorating kind of girl / lover of painted furniture walked by an antique store called 5th St. Antiques in Clovis, CA and saw this sad looking table sitting in front. It had no price tag so she kept on walking. About an hour later she walked by it again. See she was not looking for a table. She was looking for a bench for her bedroom to paint. But she couldn’t stop thinking about the potential of this table.Look at those scrolling legs and fantastic shape….

5th st antiques

Then an ah ha moment happened…She was currently using a bench as a coffee table in the family room. “So what if we moved the bench we have upstairs and used this as a coffee table instead?” she thought.

The owner said she’s give her a good deal since she just bought it and hadn’t even brought it inside yet. Plus she was planning on painting it before reselling it in her store and now she wouldn’t have to.

Then the handy husband who says he doesn’t like painted furniture looked at her with a grumpy face when she came walking in with this sad looking table. He thought she was crazy and kept asking how much she spent on “that thing”.

Before and after Annie Sloan Coffee table makeover

But then after she painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Dark Wax the table looked all pretty and perfect for the room. The husband finally admitted it looked great too and that she was right after all!

The end.

True Story! Didn’t she turn out beautiful. I’m so in love with this table!

How to use Annie Sloan Dark Wax

This table has two coats of Provence blue. Then a coat of Clear wax. Then a coat of Dark Wax. To use the dark wax, paint some on and then wipe back with a cloth to get the effect you want. It’s kind of scary but it wipes back easily……..The Dark Wax is what makes the details of the wood stand out and makes it look aged.

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Nightstand Makeover (Two Color Distress)

Annie Sloan French linen nightstand

Well I managed to paint just one piece of bedroom furniture this week since my poor husband injured himself and shattered his toe and had to have pins put in his foot this week. He is resting and healing, but man it sure has been a crazy couple weeks with little league starting and driving hubby to doctors and work because it’s his driving foot…blah! Never a dull moment. Ever since that Annie Sloan workshop I attended two weeks ago all I wanted to do was paint my nightstands…and the first one is complete!

And in case you haven’t been with me long, this is the year of the master bedroom makeover! I have been slowly getting projects done…In an effort to save money we are painting our current furniture instead of buying new.

before and after nightstand Annie Sloan Chalkpaint makeover

I used Annie Sloan pure white, french linen, and clear wax.

Annie Sloan Paint and wax

I love that this paint has no smell so you can paint indoors. It was cold this day and I wanted to catch up on some TV shows 🙂

My husband wasn’t thrilled about me painting this furniture. He’s a man who loooves wood grain, but it’s time for a change..He’s had this set for about ten years. He also doesn’t really like distressed paint so we compromised and I only did the two drawers that way.

So first I did a good two coats of french linen.

Next came the Pure White. I painted the lip on the table top white and the bottom. Plus the drawers. The drawers I painted very very lightly.with the white.

Photo: Here's what's happening in my living room! #anniesloan #frenchlinen #nosmell

After using the clear wax I carefully distressed in order to see a little bit of the french linen on the drawers. So the drawers have two colors.

I had some left over fabric from the throw pillows so I covered a book with it! It’s just like covering a school text book only using an iron for creases.

I watched Martha Stewart make one on this video. That Martha..she knows it all 🙂

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Workshop & Side Table Makeover

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Workshop

Last month I attended a local Annie Sloan Chalk Paint workshop and wrote about it for Central Valley Moms. I knew you all you DIY crafty people would like to see it too! Plus I will be featuring some more of my own chalk paint makeovers on Fancy Frugal Life because now I’m totally addicted…. Here is my post:

One of the first things Vicki Shoemaker, owner of 3 Oaks Studio in Old Town Clovis, will teach you in her decorative paint workshops is “Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (TM) is a paint that breaks all the rules.” I attended a “Chalk Paint Basics” workshop this past Saturday at her shop for an entire afternoon of painting, music, and furniture makeovers.

Let me just say this was heaven for me, a work from home mom, who loves DIY projects and learning new creative skills!

Annie Sloan Paint

3 Oaks Studio is a certified Stockist for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (not to be confused with chalkboard paint). Available in over 30 colors, it’s a paint that requires no priming or sanding and is beautiful on furniture, cabinets, walls, and much more. The water-based paint and wax products are fast drying and have no smell!

Plus As I found out…is very easy to apply and forgiving in case you make mistakes.

Each of us brought a small piece of furniture to paint at the workshop.

Before we dug into our projects Vicki taught us a couple of different decorative finishes like this

two color distressing technique,

and this textured rustic finish using paint and dark wax.

Here is a small table from my home I brought to paint.

I painted one coat of Duck Egg Blue followed by one coat of Barcelona Orange and distressed.

It turned out great and looks very nice in my house!

Annie Sloan chalk Paint Makeover before and after

She even has a large variety of stencils for embellishments during class. (I used a french postage stamp stencil on the bottom of my table.)

Overall, I am now a huge fan of this type of paint and can’t wait to use it in future projects in my home. I ‘m equally excited to find Vicki who really is a tremendous resource and wealth of information on painting projects! You can tell she enjoys her passion and eager to share her tips with customers.

Next time you are in Old Town Clovis stop in and discover your inner DIY creative painter self.
