Herringbone Pattern Painted Accent Wall Using Tape

herringbone pattern painted wall Fancy Frugal Life

Today I’m stopping in to share a very last minute project we completed this weekend while the furniture was still out of our bedroom. We are currently replacing all the flooring upstairs with this pretty birch hardwood flooring we recently found on clearance at Floor & DĂ©cor in Glendale, AZ. Turns out replacing the flooring is very similar to moving out then in again! Yikes, lots of work, and the stairs and kids rooms still need to be done so our home is a little chaotic right now! 🙂 boring beige wall fix

Most of our home was this same beige color, Riviera Beach by Behr specifically. It’s a nice neutral, but to have all the rooms this color is super boring! We’ve painted the kitchen, powder room downstairs, the upstairs loft, stairway, hallway, and my office, It’s all becoming Exhausting! I do want to make our master bedroom special and unique so I decided to paint an accent wall in here and leave the other three walls the same color beige. Well six hours, 52 pieces of frog tape, and 4 more paint colors later we now have this!!
how to tape a herringbone pattern wall fancy frugal lifeThe furniture and accessories of our room are the color pallet of coral, turquoise, grey, and beige. I adore these colors together! They are so bright, modern, and also relaxing.

Coral and Turquoise Color Pallet for BedroomWe started off by measuring the middle of the wall and using a laser level to tape it off vertically using Frog Tape. We then found the center again on both sides and repeated the process. I also taped off the ceiling and the sides of the wall. We then measured every 9 inches and made marks on the tape from top to bottom. You then just use those marks to tape off your herringbone pattern. I’m not gonna lie, this was very time consuming! 🙂 We have textured walls, so I really tried to use my nail and ran it along the edges to make sure the tape was sealed.

I have so many wall color paint samples in our garage, so I picked three that matched our room’s pallet and started filling in a few of the boxes with each color. The last step was to paint two coats of white on the remaining part of the wall, and remove the tape. There was some bleeding, but I ended up using an angled makeup brush to fix those,  and it looks great! I am so happy I took the time to complete this project!! It looks so pretty and makes me happy everyday to wake up to!

Herring Bone accent wall in Coral, blue and greyWe finished the room with some Ikea photo shelves and some pretty curtains from Kirklands. My husband has been replacing all the base in the house with a nice thick molding and its so pretty!
Ikea photo frame shelvesI was using a gold vintage mirror in here and decided to paint it white. It fits so much better.
Master Bedroom 2Horray for a pretty room… Thanks for stopping by!! I’m looking forward to putting the rest of our home back together and share more project pictures! Pretty much all of our spare time has been used in painting and replacing lots of woodwork!

DIY Kitchen Wall Pallet Wall

pallet wall kitchen bar fancy frugal life

We have a ton of home projects going on all at once, and recently finished this pallet wall in the kitchen bar area! I’m excited to be sharing some of the photos today!

We are in love with how amazing how it turned out. What a satisfying project!! The style I love is kind of a farmhouse industrial look and this type of wall is perfect for it!  We also finished making and installing some awesome mason jar lighting above the kitchen bar. I’ll save those details for a different post, but that is also a great DIY project.

Most of the credit goes to my talented husband who has turned into quite the carpenter.

I was the one who painted and stained the wood though! ha. All I did was paint with watered down blue paint on some pieces of wood, and then a also a grey black stain on others. On a couple pieces I did a light stain first, and then did watered down paint on top. The goal was to give it some blue and grey colors while still being able to see the wood grain.

It turns out so fun!

Painting Blue and Grey Planked Pallet Wall fancy frugal life

We are tearing out all the old small baseboards in our house and slowly replacing with a nice thick base. (When I say me, I paint and my husband does most of it. lol) What a difference just that detail makes!! So amazing.

DIY Pallet Wall Fancy Frugal LifeWe still have to paint some of the corner molding, and also fix the electric box. I’m not sure Joel would attempt this pattern again, which was his idea, just because the angles were frustrating at the end. It for sure would have been easier just to do straight across, but this herringbone look is so pretty!
Kitchen bar pallet wallI love how it turned out and looks pretty with the Ikea bar stools. This little wall adds some interest and style to the area and we love it! What do you think?

Ikea Kallax Shelving Unit Turned “Surf Shack”

Ikea Kallax Shelf turned Surf Shack

With my kids back to school already I’m hoping to find the time to share some of the home projects we’ve been working on lately. This summer we swam almost every day, and it made moving back to the extreme heat better!

I was also excited that moving back to Phoenix meant I get Ikea back! Hooray.

While I was there, I came up with the idea to look for something I could store all of our pool towels, swim suits, goggles, and sunscreen all in one spot by the sliding glass backyard door. This is my solution to my kids and hubby yelling for towels and “Where’s my goggles and snorkel?”.

ikea hooks installed on the sides of shelvesPlus, it does makes more sense to store the swim suits down here in these pretty Ikea rattan bins instead of upstairs in their dressers. I love using my galvanized bucket for the sunscreen and borrowed this surf shack sign from my son’s room I originally found at Goodwill.

We bought a house! & Kitchen/Bath Inspiration

dream kitchen

If you haven’t already heard via Instagram, we have moved back to Phoenix, AZ! I am from here and happy to be home. In the past several years we have moved to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Fresno, and now back to Phoenix where we have purchased a home and hope to STAY!! My husband is in construction management so we’ve been moving for different projects he’s been on, but now he works for a company with (hopefully) plenty of work in the area! Hooray.

Moving gets harder as the kids get older and super hard on me. But we’ve had lots of great adventures and can’t wait for this chapter too. Here are a few pics of our house and we hope to make it our dream, forever home 🙂
new house pic

The backyard has an amzing pool with grotto and my kids are thrilled with it. The inside has a nice kitchen, but it was built in 2004 with basic builder grade bathrooms, so we hope to do lots of cosmetic improvements and remodel the bathrooms someday and add upgraded flooring throughout. I plan to change a lot of the paint colors and try to brighten it up.
Fancy Frugal Life New HouseI’m finding myself more attracted to neutral white and grey bathrooms and kitchens as well as flooring.

We love the look and durability of wood grain floor tile that’s so popular right now, don’t you? Look at this gorgeous floor called Timberlook Floor Tile. How amazing would that be?!

Check out this dreamy butler style sink! I’m obsessed with this style of sink.

I do love a unique backsplash and check out this White Dune Tile example. I’ve seen this stuff used on remodeling shows but never knew the name!

Wouldn’t you love to soak in this beautiful freestanding bath tub? Yes please! I present you with my dream bathtub!

White and Gold Mirror Makeover

painting with gold guilded wax

Good morning!

Happy Sunday! This mirror is one of my favorite ever transformations. I wanted to give some more details about this little fun bright corner of the house!

thrift store painted mirror fancy frugal life

We found the long mirror for around $10 at Yoshi’s thrift store warehouse inside the old Nabisco building in downtown Fresno. It’s a fun place to treasure hunt! Isn’t the shape of the mirror awesome? I love finding unique pieces like this to customize our home!

It has a couple coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure white, and Annie Sloan clear wax. There is a little distressing with sand paper as well. After the paint was dry I decided to highlight the details of the mirror with gold gilding wax and a small paint brush. The wax was from the same shop as the Chalk Paint. This was an easy couple hour project, love those kind!

There she is all pretty and made over 🙂 Speaking of pretty,I wanted to point out this fun mirrored light blue cabinet. Remember last year I won a $250 HomeGoods gift card giveaway social media contest for the best find. (It was a photo of my $30 bedding set that won.) Isn’t that so exciting!!!? I never win stuff so I was super psyched 🙂

I used the gift card to buy this cabinet and I love how it looks with this mirror! The cute clock is also HomeGoods.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a beautiful day!

Spring has Sprung! My Cherry Blossom & Tulip Spring Wreath

Easy Tulip & Cherry Blossom Wreath

Hooray it’s Spring, and I made an easy wreath for the front door to celebrate! I know some people are turned off by faux flowers, but I feel like if they are presented in a classy way, they can be a really fun way to dress up a room or front door. This project was super easy and took me less than an hour. Plus, I bought these flowers on a day they were 40% off at Michaels, and with an extra 25% off total purchase coupon…. I love when that happens, because at full price this could get a little pricey.

Easy cherry blossom wreathI already had this plain stick wreath form, and purchased three bundles of both the cherry blossoms and white tulips. All I did was arrange the cherry blossoms around the wreath and tie them down with floral wire. I took about five or six tulips and arranged them so they were staggered, and tied them with wire. Then, I tied the whole bundle to the wreath with wire. There’s about five or six bundles of tulips tied around the inside portion of the wreath.

I am super busy right now writing some Easter posts for Hip2Save.com before we go on Spring break to Washington D.C to visit my dad and see some REAL life cherry blossoms! 🙂

How to fold a doily into an envelope (Easy dolllar store Valentine’s Day craft)

How to fold a doily into an envelope fancy frugal life

Hi there! I hope you are haveing a fabulous day full of love and joy! Yesterday I prepped for my daughter’s kindergarten party and folded 30 of these heart doilies into envelopes. They made love letters to their parents today as a party craft. Our teacher does these every year and I thought it was so cute and clever. I’m sure their little letters will be a darling keepsake 🙂

To make these all you have to do is turn the heart upside down, fold the two sides in, and the bottom up. Glue the sides, and fold the top down as an envelope. So easy, right?
Valentine Doiley Envelopes Fancy Frugal LIfeWe used these cute stickers that look like stamps from Michael’s craft store.

I also wanted to show you the arrangement I made for our teacher as a gift from the parents. I love that you can always make a gorgeous bouquet for under $20 with Trader Joes flowers!
